Summer is in full effect, and while figuring out how to safely lounge beachside and maybe even attend BBQs mid-pandemic, you may also be thinking about how to keep your skin glowing and healthy during these hot summer months.
Summer heat and humidity can severely affect your skin in several ways.
HIGH TEMPS = MORE BLEMISHES AND BREAKOUTS
First, there is scientific evidence that flare-ups of blemishes and breakouts happen significantly more in the hot summer months. Heat and humidity make your skin an overly hospitable environment for the unwelcome guest of cutibacterium acnes (c. acnes) bacteria, which is associated with breakouts and blemishes, as well as redness and inflammation.
Second, this breakout problem is exacerbated by the fact that we will all likely need to be wearing masks most of the time that we are outdoors this summer. The partially occlusive mask can heat up the surface temperature of your skin from 2-10 degrees F above the normal 98.6F, and cause you to sweat even more. This warm, moist environment under your mask, coupled with sweat, results in the bacteria associated with acne growing more readily.
Third, the outer layer of skin, called the stratum corneum, is your primary defense against external elements like pollution, heat and humidity, smoke, and the bad bacteria that can cause skin problems. If summer weather tempts you to bask in the sunshine, you’ll be drying out that outer layer of skin, the all-important protective defense against the outside world. When the stratum corneum becomes dry or even damaged from sunburn, it can crack and lose its protective ability, allowing bad bacteria to enter your skin and cause inflammation, breakouts, redness, and discoloration.
At Ellis Day Skin Science, we are focused on helping you attain and maintain a healthy, balanced skin microbiome. Featured in Allure as the “Holy Grail,” our brand new active phage serum, Wild Resilience™, targets the bad bacteria on your skin and enables the good bacteria to flourish. By using this serum on a daily basis, you’ll be maintaining the all-important balance in your skin microbiome, which also helps ensure your skin barrier maintains its defenses against all that the hot, hot summer can bring on!
