Phages: A Hero Microorganism
At Ellis Day Skin Science, we believe in the power of natural science to create meaningful and effective change. And one of the most amazing discoveries in science in the last hundred years is phage, microorganisms that target and kill bacteria.
Phages were discovered about one hundred years ago, but they have been important to life on earth for billions of years because they keep bacteria in check. There are trillions upon trillions of bacteria in the world, and for every strain of bacterium, there is its own matching antidote -- a phage. What’s more, phages are truly bioactive. A phage stays “asleep,” if you will, until its bacteria match shows up, at which point it “awakens.”
Phages can be found everywhere in the natural world: in oceans, in the earth, in forests, even in the clouds. There are more phages in the world than there are stars in the universe. And phages already live on your skin and in your body. In fact, about one billion phages pass through your body everyday. We can think of phages as a foundational microorganism to our species and a physical force of nature that exists anywhere there are bacteria, including on your skin, to keep balance.
